Now that my site is up, how can I get traffic to my blog? It's the question on every blog owner's mind. Aside from your immediate family and friends, who else will ever read what you're posting? Let's take a look at some simple strategies for encouraging folks to stop by your site, stay awhile, and interact.

First off, make sure you're posting high-quality information to your blog. Think of the kinds of things you'd like to read about and post interesting content frequently. Include photos and occasional graphics to make your post more interesting and your blog more reader friendly. Be personal and engaging, sharing funny experiences and as many tips and shortcuts to success in your niche as you can.

Secondly, many writers post new blog entries to their Facebook and Twitter accounts. I've found several of my friends' blogs via Facebook, and am always interested in what they have to say. The simplest way to get traffic to your blog is to start looking in your own backyard.

If you don't have a Facebook account yet, it's a cinch to sign up. You can find old high school, college, and work friends from all over the globe. Since these people have already heard of you, then it's likely they'd be interested in checking out your blog, just to see what you're up to. "Friend" all the folks you can from your past and present and post each time you make a contribution to your blog.

Next, make a list of five high-quality, well-trafficked blogs in your niche and post to them regularly. Few people comment to blogs, and site owners usually get an email when someone does make the rare comment. When you contribute quality information to someone's site regularly, you will quickly become well-known to that blog owner. Naturally, others will see your posts and perhaps follow a link to your blog to find out more. But even more importantly, you set yourself up as an authority in your niche in the eyes of a potential partner - the site owner. Please remember, the emphasis is on quality contributions on a regular basis, so try to post a helpful, insightful comment once a week to the niche blog.

Then after 8-12 weeks, contact the site owner to see if he/she would like to be a guest blogger on your site. If you have posted helpful information to your own blog on a regular basis, then you'll appear to be a top-notch person in the niche. Will the person bite? It depends on what's going on in his/her life at the time. If you don't hear back in two weeks, don't stop posting to the other blog. Be patient and re-contact the person again. You don't want to badger the site owner, just let him/her know that you're still interested in having a guest blogger whenever he/she's available.

Chances are, if you're posting high-quality information from your own unique perspective, folks will share your blog with others. This word of mouth marketing can't be beat. Put a sign up form on your site to notify others of your new posts, and build a loyal list of fans! This list can actually become a wonderful stream of income over time.

If you've heard of others shelling out a load of cash for site traffic, but think, "I don't want to spend any money to get traffic to my blog," then targeting your friend base first makes perfect sense. Partner with some other sites in your niche, and you could establish a regular readership within three to four months. When it comes to building your own space on the net, slow and steady pays off.
